Odoo, Sage or SAP: which ERP should a Moroccan SME choose?

Comparatif des ERP Odoo, Sage et SAP pour une PME marocaine

In Morocco, almost every ERP tender comes down to the same question: Odoo, Sage or SAP? Each has its place, however. The right choice depends on your size, the complexity of your processes and your ability to evolve the tool. We first offer a neutral framework, then our view as an integrator.

In short:

  • Odoo suits most SMEs that want a single, scalable tool.
  • Sage remains a good choice if your needs are limited to accounting and payroll.
  • SAP is mainly justified for subsidiaries of international groups and high volumes.

Three different approaches

  • Odoo: a modular, open-source suite. You start with a few applications (sales, inventory, invoicing) and add others as needs arise. The code is also open and modifiable.
  • Sage: historically well established in Morocco, especially for accounting and payroll. For this reason, its main asset is a large network of accounting firms and already trained users. In addition, its product ranges go from small businesses to integrated ERP.
  • SAP: the benchmark for large groups. SAP Business One targets SMEs, while S/4HANA is aimed at large organizations with complex, multi-country processes.

Odoo, Sage or SAP: comparison by criterion

Criterion Odoo Sage SAP
Functional scope Very broad (CRM, e-commerce, manufacturing, HR, website) Strong in finance and payroll, varies by range Very deep, especially in manufacturing and finance
Entry cost Low (Community is free, Enterprise per user) Medium High
Customization Very open (Python, modules) Possible, more constrained Powerful but costly
Implementation time Fast if you stay close to the standard Fast for accounting Long
Interface Modern web, mobile Depends on the range Depends on the product
Ecosystem in Morocco Growing fast Well established Focused on large accounts

Choose Odoo if…

  • You want a single tool for sales, inventory, purchasing, accounting and e-commerce.
  • Your business has specific processes, and you want to model them without paying high license fees.
  • Finally, you prefer to start small and expand in phases.

Sage is still relevant if…

  • Your main need is accounting and payroll, and your accounting firm already works with Sage.
  • Moreover, your other operations (inventory, manufacturing) are simple or managed in another tool.

SAP is justified if…

  • You are a subsidiary of an international group already running SAP.
  • Your volumes and complexity (multi-country, multi-currency, heavy industry) require an ERP of this level, and you have the corresponding budget.

The forgotten criterion: electronic invoicing

The DGI is gradually rolling out mandatory electronic invoicing from 2026. This criterion therefore applies to every ERP, whichever you choose.

That is why, before signing, ask your vendor or integrator these three questions:

  • First, how does the ERP generate invoices in the required format?
  • Next, how does it connect to the DGI platform?
  • Finally, who maintains this connector when regulations change?

On this point, an open tool like Odoo has an advantage: if the connector doesn’t yet exist for your version, it can be developed. See our dedicated article: E-invoicing in Morocco: how to make Odoo compliant with the DGI.

How to decide in 5 steps

  1. First, list your key processes: sales, inventory, purchasing, manufacturing, accounting, payroll.
  2. Then identify what’s specific to you: what your business does differently from others.
  3. Estimate the total cost over 3 to 5 years: licenses, implementation, training and maintenance.
  4. Check local compliance: Moroccan taxation, payroll and DGI electronic invoicing.
  5. Finally, ask for a demo on your own use cases, not on a standard scenario.

Our view as an integrator

In short, for most Moroccan SMEs, Odoo offers the best balance between functional coverage, total cost and freedom to evolve.

That doesn’t make it an automatic choice, though. If your only need is payroll and accounting, a specialized tool may be enough.
